What is SEO and Why is it Important?

In the website world, we often hear the term SEO but what does that actually mean and why do you care? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is how your site gets found by search engines. The result is increased website traffic, which in turn means more revenue for you.

It’s about understanding what people are searching for online, the answers they are seeking, the words they’re using, and the type of content they wish to consume. Knowing the answers to these questions will allow you to connect to the people who are searching online for the solutions you offer.

Search engines comb through pieces of content on thousands of websites to find answers to what is being asked or searched for. Content is searched and indexed by use of site “crawlers” which then order the sites by which they conclude will answer a particular query the best.

As site crawls and indexing are done by a machine, they have a particular system that is used to rate your site. You may have all the greatest content in the world, but if it’s not formatted in a way that helps search engines find it, you will receive a poor rating and your site will end up at the tail end of the search where no one will find it.
